Held August 2, 2014 in Ottawa, Canada, Pokrova Network and Chamberfest 20, together with the community partnered with Klezmer/Gypsy/Punk superpartyband Lemon Bucket Orkestra for “Animate the Capital” – a rollicking musical walking tour through downtown Ottawa’s historic ByWard Market following by a with a late-night candlelit street party.
Pokrova Bilyj Holos singers performed two traditional songs – “Oj Letilo Kupajlo” and “Schuryata” – on William Street during the second stop of the musical tour.
At the final stop of the tour, Pokrova and Lemon Bucket performed traditional Ukrainian folk songs under the lights and stars of Parliament Hill. A haunting song (“Plyve Kacha”) evoking events at Ukraine’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) was sung while fireworks from the International Fireworks show in Gatineau, Quebec, pierced its final notes.
Pokrova led the finale with a traditional Ukrainian Canadian kolomeyjka – the celebration circle dance encouraging everyone to show off their dance ability, while moving and grooving to the beat of Lemon Bucket Orkestra.
Pokrova Network is proud to share the unique Ukrainian tradition of song and dance in Ottawa, Canada, in partnership with Ottawa Chamberfest 20.
